Rainforest in Eastern Tasmania - Floristics and Conservation

Six floristic communities are described from rainforest in northern and eastern Tasmania. The communities occur in lower rainfall areas, where they are often restricted ro fire-protected sites. They have climatic envelopes which are significantly distinct from each other and from rainforest in higher rainfall areas. The conservation status of the communities is assessed.

Paralytic shellfish poisoning in south eastern Tasmania.

Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) is a public health risk worldwide, resulting from the consumption of seafood that has bioaccumulated toxins produced by microalgae.1 Bivalve shellfish (such as mussels, clams, oysters and scallops) pose a particularly high risk as they feed by filtration, providing a method of toxin accumulation. Algae responsible for causing PSP include several species of th...

Lower Palaeozoic Unconformities in South-western Tasmania

Recent geological work in south-west Tasmania on a regional scale has allowed the compilation of existing information regarding Lower Palaeozoic unconformities, namely the description of new localities and in some cases the amplification and extension of previously described exposures. Carey and Banks (1954, p. 245) provide a review of information to 1954 and their classification of unconformit...

Estimating Historical Eastern North Pacific Blue Whale Catches Using Spatial Calling Patterns

Blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) were exploited extensively around the world and remain endangered. In the North Pacific their population structure is unclear and current status unknown, with the exception of a well-studied eastern North Pacific (ENP) population. Despite existing abundance estimates for the ENP population, it is difficult to estimate pre-exploitation abundance levels and gau...

A Regional Lapse Rate for Tasmania

In an earlier paper (Nunez & Colhoun 1986), the gradient of near-surface air temperature with altitude, commonly known as the environmental lapse rate (ELR), was obtained for Mount Wellington, Tasmania. Comparing these local lapse rates with an ELR for the entire island did not give good agreement for maximum temperatures in summer or minimum temperatures in winter. These differences are attrib...
